Dutch Regulator Cautions on Using AI for Election Advice

(MENAFN) The Dutch data protection authority (AP) has issued a warning to voters, advising against relying on AI chatbots for election guidance ahead of the national elections.

The agency raised concerns that these tools provide inaccurate information and may inadvertently direct users toward two prominent opposition parties.

According to the AP, AI-generated advice heavily favored two leading political blocs – the right-wing Party for Freedom (PVV) and the left-wing GroenLinks-PvdA coalition – with these parties accounting for 56% of the chatbot responses.

This concentration of recommendations contrasts sharply with the fragmented Dutch political landscape, which features a 15-party parliament.

Polls suggest that the two favored blocs may secure only around a third of the vote in the upcoming election on October 29.

The AP's report highlighted that some parties, such as the center-right CDA, were almost entirely omitted from chatbot recommendations, even when users’ inputs aligned closely with these parties’ platforms.

The watchdog's vice-chair, Monique Verdier, commented that while AI chatbots may appear innovative, they are ineffective as tools for voting advice.

She criticized the technology for being “unclear and difficult to verify,” and warned that it could mislead voters into supporting parties that don't align with their political preferences.

“Chatbots may seem like clever tools, but as a voting aid, they consistently fail,” Verdier emphasized.

The agency tested four prominent chatbots, which it chose not to name, and discovered that they sometimes suggested voting for one of the major parties, even when users provided campaign material from smaller parties.

Based on these findings, the AP strongly advised against using AI chatbots for election-related advice.
