Dutch Voters Head to Polls

(MENAFN) Polling locations opened throughout the Netherlands on Wednesday morning as citizens began voting to choose representatives for the House of Representatives. Current surveys indicate a very close competition among the top political parties.

Approximately 13.5 million registered voters are anticipated to participate in the national elections, with polling stations operating from 7:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. (0600–2000 GMT), local media reported.

In various cities, including Zwolle, Arnhem, and Castricum, several polling sites began accepting voters at midnight, giving early participants a chance to cast their ballots in distinctive settings such as a student café, a museum, and a community center.

Based on the most recent survey, the Party for Freedom (PVV), the GroenLinks-PvdA coalition, and the liberal Democrats 66 are running in a dead heat, while the Christian Democratic Appeal and the center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy remain close behind.

Migration has emerged as the dominant issue in the Dutch election campaign, as voters cite it as their primary concern.

This has strengthened far-right backing led by PVV chief Geert Wilders, while all major political groups pledge stricter asylum measures amid a housing shortage that many associate with migration.

In total, 1,166 contenders from 27 political parties are vying for 150 parliamentary seats in the Dutch general election.

It is widely expected that no single party will secure the 76 seats necessary to form a majority government independently.

The initial exit poll findings are anticipated to be released soon after the conclusion of voting.
